Quantum Construction Consultants completed a feasibility study with conceptual plans for a multi-use path originating at Watson Park on the east side of U.S. Route 3, crossing U.S. Route 3 with connection and upgrades to an existing trail along the Souhegan River bank, to the east side of the F.E. Everett Turnpike, for a total distance of approximately 2500 linear feet.

A number of alternatives were examined, including the preferred alternative of repurposing the former Merrimack Village Dam headgate structure and sluiceway for the new path to pass under U.S. Route 3, thereby providing a visual connection to the historical aspects of the former dam, existing headworks, canal, and historic Chamberlain Bridge. Included in the project is the reconstruction of the existing roadside elevated sidewalk on the east side of U.S. Rte. 3 / Daniel Webster Highway, immediately north of the Chamberlain Bridge, to restore connectivity to the central business area south of the Souhegan River.

The existing sidewalk is severely deteriorated and currently covered by steel plates for public safety. The project is currently under final design and is funded by NHDOT through the Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and local municipal match.
